中谷真理子の創作活動は、1992年に東京藝術大学美術学部デザイン科を卒業してから2009年までを第1期、活動休止期間を経て、再開した2015年から現在までを第2期と区分している。

　第2期からは、休止期間に自身の生活が大きく変化したことに伴い、子供と対峙する日常の様々な経験が作品の核となっている。

扱うテーマは、現代の日本で子供を産み育てる過程に起きる様々な出来事や、とりまく環境についてである。自身の子育ての経験は、現代の日本における少子化や養育・教育環境などの問題とも密接に関係している事が、作品制作の動機づけになっている。

　作品の形態は、古着の子供服やオムツを素材とし、綿等を詰めて造形したソフトスカルプチャや、使い古された靴や玩具にグルー、ビーズ、スパンコール、レースなどで装飾を施したオブジェ、また、それらを組み合わせた立体作品である。

Mariko Nakatani graduated from the Tokyo University of The Arts in 1992.

Her artistic activities are divided into the first phase from 1992 to 2009, and the second phase from 2015, when they resumed after a period of inactivity.

Her life has changed significantly during the rest period. From the second period, the various experiences of daily life confronting children are at the core of the artwork.

Her themes are the various events that take place in the process of raising children in modern Japan and the surrounding environment.

The motivation for her artwork is that her child-raising experience is closely related to issues such as the declining birthrate, childcare and educational environment in modern Japan.

Many of hers works are soft sculptures made by packing cotton in used clothing and diapers.

Some works are worn shoes and toys decorated with glue, beads, sequins and lace.

And it is a three-dimensional work that combines them.
